Feedback sought on Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon test in Litchfield

WILLMAR, Minn. – A survey taking feedback on the RRFB test in Litchfield is open until November 24.  Residents are encouraged to take the short survey so that MnDOT and the city of Litchfield can better gather feedback on the intersection of Highway 12 and 3rd Street.

Highway 12 will be reconstructed in downtown Litchfield in 2020.  As part of the project process, all intersections have been thoroughly analyzed.  The traffic signal at the intersection of 3rd Street and Highway 12 has been evaluated and MnDOT is recommending that it be removed.

When MnDOT made the recommendation to remove the traffic signal, the primary concern was how to safely get pedestrians across the highway.  There are several cost effective options that serve pedestrians and cause less delays for drivers.  The recommended option is a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon or RRFB.

MnDOT and the city of Litchfield have partnered to test a RRFB at Highway 12 and 3rd Street for a period of 90 days.

There will be multiple opportunities for community members to comment.  That feedback, along with the traffic data, will be presented to the Litchfield City Council for their decision (winter/spring 2018).

The RRFB was installed on October 24, 2017.  The test has been going on for approximately 4 weeks.

The on-line survey is available now at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/litchfieldrrfb.  For more information on the project visit the webpage at www.dot.state.mn.us/d8/projects/hwy12litchfield.
