Minnesota River State Trail being proposed from New Ulm to Judson

Public input sought into preferred routes between Courtland and Judson

MANKATO, Minn. – A segment of the Minnesota River State Trail is being considered between New Ulm and Judson and a steering committee is looking for public input into a preferred route between Courtland and Judson as a part of MnDOT’s statewide district bicycle plan.

Staff will be available at two upcoming events to visit with area residents and trail users; the Mankato River Ramble on October 8 (at the Minneopa Shelter) and the Courtland Fish Fry on October 14.

Three routes are under consideration by the group that consists of the Department of Natural Resources, Department of Transportation and local communities and bike advocates:

  1. Along Highway 14 from Courtland to Nicollet and Nicollet County Road 23 to Judson
  2. Along Nicollet County Roads, 25, 62 and 23
  3. Along Nicollet County Road 24 and Highway 68

The route would likely go from New Ulm to Courtland along future new Highway 14 alignment.  From Courtland each of the routes offer varying characteristics to them, but the agreed destination is Judson because it presents the possibility of connecting to the Minneopa Trail, which connects to Mankato.

“One of the reasons we want to make the determination soon is to tie the trail plans into the work on the Highway 14 expansion designs from New Ulm to Nicollet,” explains Lisa Bigham, MnDOT planning director, “and take advantage of funding if it becomes available.”

“This is a great opportunity for the DNR to move forward with a segment of the Minnesota River State Trail as authorized by the state legislature in 2002 and with a master plan completed in 2015,” said Craig Beckman, DNR area supervisor.
