Construction begins April 20 for Hwy 63/I-90 interchange improvement project
STEWARTVILLE, Minn. – Motorists using Hwy 30 west of Hwy 63 will encounter changes in access and traffic control at a county road intersection when the project begins construction April 20, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
Two changes will take place for motorists who use Hwy 30:
- Stop sign changes at Hwy 30/ Olmsted County Road 8 – the intersection at Hwy 30 and Olmsted 8 will be changed. Motorists on Hwy 30 will need to stop at a stop sign before turning north or south onto Olmsted 8. Motorists on Olmsted 8 will not have a stop sign.
- Hwy 30 detour – the intersection of Hwy 30 west and Hwy 63 will be closed and rerouted. Hwy 63 motorists who want to access Hwy 30 west of Hwy 63 will exit at Olmsted County Road 16, (the interchange that serves Rochester International Airport), travel west to Olmsted 8 south to Hwy 30 west.
Meanwhile, motorists on Hwy 63 can expect lane closures between Rochester International Airport and Stewartville beginning April 20.
Mathiowetz Construction, a MnDOT contractor, will begin building the crossover lanes to move traffic once construction starts to replace the Hwy 63 bridges over Interstate 90.
During the two-year construction project both Hwy 63 bridges will be replaced, Hwy 30 west rerouted, some I-90 exit ramps will be added or realigned and the access to 90th Street SE will be closed and rerouted.
After the crossover lanes are completed, traffic will be switched to single lanes with vehicles traveling north and south in the southbound lanes. Construction will then begin in the northbound lanes, which will be closed to traffic during this construction year with the northbound bridge being replaced and both directions of traffic using the southbound bridge over I-90.
Construction will take place in 2020 and 2021 to complete this $15,419,780 project. Detours are planned at the I-90 intersection with Hwy 63. Motorists can find more information on the plans and sign up for email updates at the MnDOT project website at www.dot.state.mn.us/d6/projects/hwy63-i90-interchange/index.html or join MnDOT’s SE Minnesota Facebook group at www.facebook.com/groups/MnDOTsoutheast/.
MnDOT road work has been identified as a critical service in Gov. Tim Walz’s Stay at Home executive order. We are being as flexible as possible with schedules during this period of lower traffic volumes to keep projects moving forward and minimize the impact to motorists. Following guidance from state and federal health officials, and to prevent further spread of COVID-19, crews will maintain social distancing practices while working.
