Updates available on Hwy 52 southbound reconstruction project’s County Road 7 intersection options
ROCHESTER, Minn. — The public is invited to review and comment on the latest updates for the reconstruction and safety improvements of southbound Highway 52 at the Goodhue County Road 7 intersection, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
MnDOT and its team has reviewed the proposed concepts and incorporated design enhancements into the working drawings of the intersection at County 7 north of Zumbrota. MnDOT also hosted an independent engineering review of the County 7 intersection, with regard to existing conditions and available options. The review was done by technical experts outside the project team, including a mix of outside engineering consultants, who are not part of the design team and MnDOT staff, who are not assigned to the project.
The intersection design evaluation, which can be found on the MnDOT project website (mndot.gov/d6/projects/hwy52-hader-southbound-improvements) in the Documents area, provides an overview of the process to review the various design options, including the advantages and disadvantages of each design that was considered. People interested in the project are encouraged to review the document.
People who have comments may send their thoughts by Feb. 17 via the comment link form on the project website. MnDOT will hold a public meeting in March to provide updates on the plans. The date, time and place will be announced later this month in advance of the meeting.
Here are some key takeaways:
- Two design proposals for the County 7 and Highway 52 intersection were considered. The second proposal includes a design (2A), which is a modification on the basic design.
- Proposal #1 calls for a full access intersection + an immediate median U-turn lane near the intersection + gravel shoulder for slow-moving vehicles.
- Proposal #2 calls for a limited access intersection + southbound median acceleration lane.
- Proposal #2A calls for a full access intersection + southbound acceleration lane.
The information is being shared now because nothing has been decided yet, and the project team continues to seek feedback on the specific designs proposed. People may share their thoughts by submitting a comment on the project webpage under the “Comments” tab.
MnDOT is scheduled in 2021 to reconstruct southbound Hwy 52 beginning 2.2 miles south of Hwy 19 in Cannon Falls to 1.2 miles north of Goodhue County Road 7, replace bridges, including those at Highway 60 west and east, install snow drift prevention measures, and build an interchange at Highway 57 and Goodhue County Road 8 in Hader.
