Paving of repaired Hwy 63 on Wisconsin side of Red Wing Bridge expected to delay traffic

RED WING, Minn. — Motorists will experience traffic delays today, Sept. 11, as construction crews pave a stretch of Highway 63 that needed emergency repairs Sept. 10 on the Wisconsin side of the Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge in Red Wing, according to the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation.

On Monday, crews determined that emergency repairs were needed on the road after sizable voids were found under the pavement at a box culvert. The repairs were needed immediately to fill and compact the gaps under the pavement to keep motorists safe and avoid significant damage to the road.

Today, Sept. 11, crews will begin paving at noon. Paving is expected to be done by early evening. Traffic delays are expected. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers, who will let one direction of traffic through the work zone and then stop it to allow the other direction to travel through.

The repair area on Highway 63 is near 825 Street on the Wisconsin side of the bridge.

The Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge project includes building a new bridge to replace the Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge, replacing the historic slip ramp Highway 63 Bridge over Highway 61, reconstructing approach roadways in Minnesota and Wisconsin, improving access to Red Wing and upgrading pedestrian and bicyclist crossings. The prime contractor on this $63.4 million construction project is Zenith Tech. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic by fall of 2019.

Motorists should always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.  For real-time traffic information in Minnesota, call 511 or visit 511mn.org.
