Steele County Road 31 bridge reopens after beam and bridge deck replacement over I-35

OWATONNA, Minn. – Steele County Road 31 reopened Tuesday, Nov. 21 after replacement work was completed on the bridge that spans Interstate 35 south of Owatonna, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

The road had been reduced to a single lane with each direction taking turns since earlier this year after the bridge was damaged in the spring by an oversized vehicle. Equipment being hauled on a trailer struck and damaged the bridge and also damaged another I-35 bridge at Steele County Road 18.

In late August the Steele County Road 31 bridge closed so crews could replace the beams and bridge deck of the bridge. The work has been added to a project south of Owatonna where 10 bridges are being replaced over two years on I-35 (six bridges) and Hwy 14 (four bridges).

Steele County Road 18 will be replaced in spring of 2018. Lunda Construction Company is the prime contractor.

Motorists interested in more information about the project, may visit the MnDOT project website at www.dot.state.mn.us/d6/projects/steelecty-bridge/index.html and sign up for email updates on the project.

Motorists should always be attentive, drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones. For real-time traffic information in Minnesota, call 511 or visit www.511mn.org.
