May 26 groundbreaking ceremony planned for Red Wing Bridge project

RED WING, Minn. – Federal, state and local officials will gather in Red Wing on Friday, May 26 for a ceremonial groundbreaking to mark the start of construction on the Red Wing Bridge project, according to the Minnesota and Wisconsin departments of transportation.

The public is invited to attend the event at 11 a.m., May 26 in Levee Park at 418 Levee Road in Red Wing.

Red Wing Mayor Sean Dowse will serve as emcee at the event, with remarks from local and state leaders during the short program.

Parking is available in a lot next to the park, in the Studebaker Lot at East Avenue and Main Street about one block from the ceremony. Ramps adjacent to the St. James Hotel as well as street parking are near the ceremony site.

The Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge will remain open to traffic during construction, barring any emergency closures. The prime contractor on this $63.4 million project is Zenith Tech, Inc. Some preparation work has begun at the site and more work will begin soon.

This project includes building a new bridge to replace the Highway 63/Eisenhower Bridge, replacing the historic Highway 63 Bridge over Highway 61, reconstructing approach roadways in Minnesota and Wisconsin, improving access to Red Wing and upgrading pedestrian and bicyclist crossings.
