Hwy 73 Kettle River Bridge project begins June 19 in Carlton County

DULUTH, Minn. — A project to replace the Kettle River Bridge on Highway 73 in Carlton County begins Monday, June 19.

During construction a detour will be in place. Beginning Monday, Highway 73 will close at milepost 15, just north of the town of Kettle River. The detour will be in place until the project is scheduled to be completed in mid-September, 2017.

Motorists will be detoured west onto County Road 6, north on County Road 22, then east on Highway 210 to Highway 73.

Project benefits:

  • More reliable and safer bridge that meets current construction standards
  • Accessibility improvements, including six-foot-wide shoulders
  • Wider channel to equalize water flow and prevent stress on the bridge
  • New passage bench beneath the bridge to allow animal crossing on a dry path.
