Ramp from Second Avenue S to Hwy 53 to close next week
VIRGINIA, Minn. – The ramp from Second Avenue in Virginia to southbound Highway 53 will close on Monday, May 22 at 6 a.m.
There will be a signed detour route from Second Avenue to Highway 53 that will allow access to the southbound lanes. That detour will follow second Avenue, 8th Street south, and South 12th Avenue West. There will also be a map on the website showing the detour route.
The closure allows crews to complete drainage work, prepare for demolition of the bridges near Southside Park west of Second Avenue and build part of the new Highway 53 alignment near Second Avenue.
The Highway 135 detour route is still in effect and provides motorists with a more direct route to and from Virginia. The new detour route is along Mineview Road and Highway 135. Traffic on westbound Highway 135 will not be able to access southbound Highway 53.
Highway 53 traffic remains with a single lane in each direction on southbound Highway 53.
That single lane traffic will run from Midway Road to a half-mile north of Second Avenue in Virginia. Crews are reconstructing northbound Highway 53 and building the new Highway 53/Highway 135 interchange. This work will be completed in August.
