Segments go up at Pier 12 this week
River bridge segment casting half complete
Oct. 21, 2015
STILLWATER, Minn. – The contractor will lift the first pre-cast river bridge segment at Pier 12 into position this week. This pier location is closest to the Wisconsin bluff.
The specially-designed cranes for lifting segments at Pier 12 arrived on site last week and were installed on top of the pier. They will be used to place segments on both sides of the pier to create the driving surface of the new river crossing. Load testing occurred this week – a necessary step before segment placement can occur.
Construction crews started placing river bridge segments at Piers 8 and 9—near the Minnesota shoreline—in early summer. Crews have placed half of the segments that make up the river bridge deck at both Piers 8 and 9.
In addition, half of the pre-cast river bridge segments have been cast. There are 650 segments that make up the new St. Croix Crossing bridge. They are fabricated at the project’s Grey Cloud Island casting yard near Cottage Grove, Minn. More than 60 percent of the pre-cast segments for the Minnesota approach have been cast at the project’s second casting yard near the Highway 36/95 interchange.
Highway 95 traffic switch
The contractor will switch the traffic configuration at the Highway 36/95 interchange by the beginning of the week of Oct. 26. Traffic will return to single-lane in each direction using both the Highway 95 northbound and southbound lanes and remain this way through the fall.
Minn. Loop Trail construction update
The project’s contractor paved the stretch of the Minnesota Loop Trail from north of Sunnyside Marina to north of Nelson Street in downtown Stillwater on Oct. 20. This phase of Loop Trail construction will be complete by the end of November.
Other St. Croix Crossing bridge construction highlights
- Construction crews are installing the third set of stay cables at Pier 8. Before the end of the week, they will begin installing the third set of stay cables at Pier 9.
- Pile driving will continue through mid-November for the foundation of Pier 13, the single pier location on the Wisconsin bluff.
Minnesota approach construction update
Construction crews continue to place pre-cast approach segments on land for both the Highway 36 approach bridges and the off-ramp to Highway 95.
Wisconsin approach construction update
Construction crews are grading the new WIS 64 eastbound lanes. They anticipate paving these lanes in 2016.
The new St. Croix Crossing bridge will open to traffic in 2017. When the St. Croix Crossing project is finished, motorists will have smoother highway pavement surfaces, improved flow at intersections, an improved frontage road system—including safer access—and a new river crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin. All of this will occur while maintaining or restoring the area’s cultural, historic and environmental resources.
