Public meetings for St. Croix Crossing project construction schedule set for March 24

Minnesota approach construction to be completed this summer

March 11, 2015

STILLWATER, Minn. – Area residents and business owners are invited to attend one of two public meetings previewing 2015 St. Croix Crossing project construction.

The meetings will occur on Tuesday, March 24, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., with a short presentation at 1 p.m., and from 4:30 to 6 p.m., with a short presentation at 5 p.m., at the Oak Park Heights City Hall—14168 Oak Park Boulevard N.

Project staff will be present to discuss the 2015 St. Croix Crossing Minnesota approach construction schedule, which includes finishing business driveways and local road connections, placing a final layer of asphalt on most road surfaces within the construction zone, and completing finishing touches, such as striping. Minnesota approach construction will be completed this summer, as well as all remaining trail and landscaping work under this contract.

Information about Wisconsin approach, St. Croix Crossing bridge work and Loop Trail construction also will be available. Wisconsin approach work resumed in early February. Beginning in April there will be road closures in Wisconsin that will require detours at various stages of construction.

During 2015 construction, Highway 36 and Highway 95 will remain open and access to businesses and residences will be available at all times.

All Minnesota approach work will be completed in summer 2015 and the new St. Croix Crossing bridge will open to traffic in fall 2016. When all work is finished, motorists will have smoother highway pavement surfaces, improved flow at intersections, an improved frontage road system—including safer access—and a new river crossing between Minnesota and Wisconsin. All of this will occur while maintaining or restoring the area’s cultural, historic and environmental resources.

Winter construction update

Construction crews have made progress on the following construction activities in winter 2014-15:

  • Crossbeam construction at Piers 8, 9 and 12 in the St. Croix River
  • Pier table and tower construction at Piers 8 and 9
  • Segment production at both project casting yards

In 2015, crews will complete all land and river piers and cast additional segments for the bridge deck. About 1,000 pre-cast segments make up the bridge deck for the river bridge and its approach ramps. Segments will be installed in 2015-16, with the first river bridge segment anticipated to be placed in late spring. Crews will also install stay cables in 2015.

Minnesota entrance monument construction

Construction crews began excavation work for the new Minnesota welcome monument on Mar. 9. The monument will be located off of Highway 36 westbound, south of the Washington County Government Center. During construction, Highway 36 westbound traffic will be single lane from Highway 95 to just east of Osgood Avenue. The intersection at Osgood Avenue will be a two-lane configuration. The project will be complete by fall 2015. The contractor is ICON Constructors, LLC.
