State officials identify worker whose backhoe was swept into flood waters
MANKATO, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation maintenance worker whose backhoe was swept into the Minnesota River shortly before noon today has been identified as Michael J. Struck, a nine-year employee with the department.
Struck, 39, was clearing debris near Seven Mile Creek on Highway 169 between Mankato and St. Peter when his backhoe was apparently pulled into the flood waters.
“Mike, like all our employees, was dedicated and willing to risk his life to keep our roads safe and passable, even under the worst conditions,” said Transportation Commissioner Tom Sorel. “Our hearts and prayers go out to his family, friends and co-workers.”
