Mn/DOT announces statewide student aviation art contest winners

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation today announced the winners of the 2011 Minnesota Aviation Art Contest for students ages six to 17.

Four winning entries in three age categories (6-9, 10-13, 14-17) were selected from more than 900 entries statewide and will be featured in the 2012 Minnesota Aviation Art Calendar. In addition, winners in each age category will receive gift certificates for art supplies and a 30-minute introductory flight at their local airport.

An official award ceremony will be held March 18, from 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m., in the State Capitol rotunda.

The first place winning artworks in each category level were sent to Washington D.C. to compete at the national level. Winners will proceed to the International Aviation Art Contest, which is an event of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale cosponsored by the National Association of State Aviation Officials Center for Aviation Research and Education and the National Aeronautics Association.

The Minnesota Aviation Art Contest, sponsored by Mn/DOT’s Office of Aeronautics, helps students learn about aviation through designing a piece of art based upon the year’s selected theme. This year’s theme was “50 Years of Human Space Flight.”

The winning artwork will be on display from March 21 – April 1 at the Mn/DOT Headquarters Building, 395 John Ireland Blvd, St. Paul, Minn. The panel of judges included professional educators, business people and aviation industry members.

Mn/DOT promotes general and commercial aviation throughout the state and provides services including aircraft registration, airport development, aviation system planning and aviation education. The department also maintains and operates aviation navigational systems and government aircraft services. Find out more at www.mndot.gov.
