Mn/DOT, Public Safety encourage motorists to plan ahead, use their winter driving skills
Pre-Thanksgiving storm may create challenges for holiday travelers
ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Departments of Transportation and Public Safety encourage motorists to use their winter driving skills for the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, as winter storms move through the state beginning Wednesday and continuing through Thursday morning.
National Weather Service forecasts predict that freezing rain, snow and winds will hit Minnesota between 3 p.m. – 9 p.m. Wednesday, during drive-time, dark-time and holiday travel-time.
Motorists should remember to:
- Check road conditions – Go to www.511mn.org or call 511 before heading out.
- Plan ahead – Make sure your vehicle is equipped with a scraper/brush, small shovel, jumper cables, and a bag of sand or cat litter for tire traction.
- Be patient – Allow more time to get to your destination. Drive at safe speeds. Remember snowplows and are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
- Stay back – Leave at least five car lengths behind the plow, far from the snow cloud.
- Buckle up, and make sure child restraints are secured.
