ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation will host the first in a series of open houses beginning Nov. 29 and Dec. 6 to solicit public input into the environmental impact study for the proposed Milwaukee-Minneapolis/St. Paul high-speed passenger rail corridor.

The Tier 1 National Environmental Policy Act Study is part of an effort by Mn/DOT, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Midwest Regional Rail Initiative, and the Federal Railroad Administration to analyze all possible routes for high-speed passenger rail between Milwaukee and the Twin Cities. The study began in March 2010.

The open houses are scheduled for:

5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Saint Paul Union Depot
214 Fourth Street E.
St. Paul, MN  55101

Monday, Dec 6, 2010
5 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Mayo Civic Center
Elliott Suite
30 Civic Center Drive SE

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Mn/DOT’s partner in this study, is also hosting a series of open houses, including one Nov. 30 in LaCrosse, Wis., from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Best Western Riverfront Hotel, 1835 Rose Street, La Crosse, WI.

Representatives from Mn/DOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be available at the open houses to answer questions. There will be a brief presentation at 5:30 p.m.

Public comment will be taken at the open houses and through Mn/DOT’s website at www.dot.state.mn.us/passengerrail/mwrri/phase7.html, beginning Nov. 29.

The public may also submit comments in writing to Praveena Pidaparthi by e-mail at praveena.pidaparthi@state.mn.us. Comments will be accepted from Nov. 29 – Dec. 29, 2010.

The Milwaukee-Minneapolis/St. Paul corridor program is part of the Midwest Regional Rail Initiative, which seeks to create a network of high-speed passenger rail corridors in the Midwest to provide business and leisure travelers with shorter travel times, additional train frequencies, and connections between urban centers and smaller communities.
