Mn/DOT to begin removing 35W bridge steel from Minneapolis park
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation will begin removing the steel remnants of the collapsed Interstate 35W Bridge from Bohemian Flats park area in Minneapolis on Tuesday, Sept. 7.
Workers will cut the steel pieces to lengths that will fit on flatbed trucks. Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 8, trucks will begin moving the steel to a storage facility on the east side of the Twin Cities metro area, near I-94 and Highway 95. The anticipated route will be from the park area west along West River Parkway to 11th Avenue South, south on 11th Avenue to 8th Street South, east on 8th Street to I-94, then east on I-94 to Highway 95.
Trucks will be hauling from the site between approximately 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mn/DOT expects the work to last about a month. Once the steel has been removed, Mn/DOT will make any necessary repairs to the park site. The steel will be held in the east metro storage area until remaining litigation regarding the I-35W bridge collapse is complete.
The bridge steel has been at Bohemian since late 2007. It was placed there by the National Transportation Safety Board as part of its investigation of the I-35W bridge collapse. The steel has been considered evidence in various litigation taking place regarding the collapse. Because it is evidence, lawyers representing various parties in the lawsuit have required that the steel not be moved. However, all parties were able to reach an agreement last month which allowed Mn/DOT to move the material to a different site.
