MINNNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- For the third full week, the Flatiron-Manson construction team continues construction work on the new Interstate 35W bridge. Work scheduled for the week of Nov. 12 includes pile driving, grading, test shaft drilling and casting.
According to Flatiron-Manson:
- Pile driving will be more noticeable this week. The work is scheduled to occur on the south side of the Mississippi River, near the Center Point Energy parking lot. Pile driving, which requires a steel driver to pound a steel pile into the ground, generates significant noise. This work will take place from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Crews will drill a second test shaft in the vicinity of Pier 3. The second shaft is necessary because of subsurface artesian conditions encountered with the first shaft. Construction of a second shaft will insure a high quality design for the new bridge foundation.
- On the north side of the river, second shifts will begin working on grading above the historic rock wall. Lights will be noticeable from 6 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Construction crews will use special “balloon” lights that radiate down to reduce light impact on area residents. Diesel-powered loaders and dump trucks will be used for grading. There may also be some permanent drilling work near the river’s north edge late in the week.
- Permanent shaft drilling could occur on the south side of the river late next week. Crews will mobilize shaft drilling equipment during the week for river-level drilling at Pier 2, near the lower lock wall.
- Crews continue to work on the casting yard project. The yard, located on I-35W between Washington Avenue and the end of the roadway, is where pre-cast sections of the bridge will be made. Layout work will begin and materials will be delivered for forming the center span segments.
The construction schedules are subject to change in inclement weather. For more information, visit the Mn/DOT Web site at www.mndot.gov or call 612/236-6901.
In related news, Flatiron-Manson said it has hired a public information officer to assist with community outreach efforts. Amy Barrett will answer the project hotline (612/236-6901), notify residents and businesses in advance of potentially disruptive project activities (i.e., noise and light disruptions, temporary utility shut-offs) and coordinate other public information initiatives. Barrett can be reached at 612/807-3264 or by e-mail at abarrett@flatironcorp.com.
