I-35W St. Anthony Falls bridge construction crews complete pile driving, continue work on bridge foundation

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — As work continues on the Interstate 35W Bridge project, one of the first noticeable activities is now complete. Construction crews finished pile driving this week and are moving ahead with other major activities including bridge foundation drilling shafts, pouring concrete and building forms for the bridge footings.

Construction activities scheduled through next week include:

  • The first concrete pour is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 5, starting with the first drilled shaft. Crews plan to drill and fill approximately 100 shafts by in December and January.

  • Nighttime construction shifts may begin soon as work continues on the north side of the river. Lights may become noticeable from 6 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.

  • Some drilling work may occur on Sundays starting Dec. 2. This will be done to take advantage of good weather and make best use of equipment.

  • The first two “casting beds” are under construction on the road bed of I-35W just north of Washington Avenue. Concrete segments for the main part of the bridge will be cast using these casting beds starting in mid-January.

Anyone interested in getting a closer look at the weekly construction progress is encouraged to attend the Sidewalk Superintendent Talks, held Saturdays at 11a.m. at the corner of Washington Avenue S and 19th Avenue (next to Grandma’s Saloon). News media are welcome to attend.
