Mn/DOT to further open northbound, southbound I-35W
Openings to Improve Traffic Flow and Local Access

ST. PAUL — By 1 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) will reopen two currently closed sections of 35W. However, Highway 280 will remain the primary detour route for 35W.

  • Southbound 35W will reopen between Stinson Boulevard and the Fourth Street/University exit.
  • Northbound 35W will reopen between I-94 and the Third Street and University of Minnesota (U of M) exits

Southbound 35W, currently closed at Stinson Boulevard, will reopen to a single lane of traffic from Stinson Boulevard to the Fourth Street/University Avenue exit for local access. The ramp from Stinson Boulevard to southbound 35W and the ramp from Fourth Street/University Avenue to northbound 35W will reopen. The ramps from Johnson Street Northeast and East Hennepin Avenue to southbound 35W will remain closed.

Northbound 35W, currently closed at I-94, will reopen to the Third Street and U of M exits for local access to downtown and the campus area. The ramp to Washington Avenue South from northbound 35W will remain closed. The 10th Avenue bridge spanning the Mississippi River parallel to 35W will also remain closed.

To facilitate smooth traffic flow, abandoned vehicles on both 35W and Highway 280 will be towed immediately. Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour (Highway 280) during the closures.

Motorists are advised to log on to www.511mn.org or www.mndot.gov for real-time traffic updates and information.
