Research Pays Off Seminar Series
Every 3rd Tuesday of the month, 10 a.m.
The National Road Research Alliance will provide a monthly seminar* to highlight research topics that will make an impact on the work done here in the state of Minnesota and around the country.
2019 Upcoming Webinars
April 16, 2019--A Study of Diamond Grinding Performance in Texas with Feng Hong from the Texas Department of Transportation.
Summary--Diamond grinding (DG) has been used by various districts in Texas to improve skid resistance and ride quality. DG also has the benefit of reducing tire/pavement interface noise. TxDOT has used DG on both jointed concrete pavement (JCP) and continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). This study analyzed various projects to derive a statewide trend on various surface characteristics of pavements due to DG. Immediately after DG, the average skid number (SN) increased by about 30%. There was about 40% reduction in average IRI immediately after the DG. For deterioration rate under the effect of factors such as time and traffic, each year the SN decreases by approximately 2.0 and IRI increases by approximately 1.7 in./mi. This study also performed crash accident analysis both before and after DG. After the completion of DG, the occurrences had reduced significantly.
