Project Summary:

Due to the increasing budget constraints and decreasing time in pavement construction, there has been renewed interest in exploring the application of cost-effective and rapid pavement construction techniques. Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) is a stiff mixture of aggregate, cementitious materials, and water, that is compacted by vibratory rollers [ACI 325, 1995]. Compacted concrete pavement (CCP) is an advanced form of RCC. CCP is comprised of similar proportions as that of RCC; however, it utilizes an admixture that enables the ability to create a surface texture mimicking standard concrete pavement. The construction of CCP involves the use of a high-density asphalt type paver that is able to achieve more than 95% density behind the paver. This is followed by a light roller, a riding trowel and a broom finish.

Past research undertaken at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) investigated the in-situ properties of RCC mixtures to explore prospective application in pavement construction [Khayat and Libre, 2014]. However, limited experience exists with CCP. This project will investigate the performance of CCP test sections designed with special design features and assess the durability of the surface texture exposed to freeze/thaw conditions. Cast hardened CCP specimens will be evaluated, and embedded instrumentation will be used to characterize the performance of CCP in Missouri.
