MnROAD Data
MnROAD staff regularly monitor the Mainline, Low Volume Road and Farm Loop test sections to track the changes in pavement performance over time. Several types of measurements are made at certain intervals throughout the year and other tests are performed on an as-needed bases. ** PROPOSED SCHEDULE OF MONITERING ACTIVITES**
The MnROAD database includes field performance data, information about traffic loadings and laboratory material testing.** MnROAD Database GUIDE **
How To Get Data
- MnROAD Data Product v. 1.0
- Request Data from MnROAD Researchers
Data Access
MnROAD is a state run public research facility allowing all of its data and reports to be available to anyone at no cost. Some data and reports are available online but direct access to the MnROAD database is limited to the key researchers at MnROAD.
This allows the MnROAD research experts to work with each data requestor to match the data that has been collected with the data needed for their study. MnROAD researchers are able to explain the exact methods and quality issues that might impact the potential use of the data requested. We request that researchers who use MnROAD data send us their research work plan. To request specific data from our MnROAD database please complete the data request form.
Data Collection Procedures
MnROAD collects and processes many types of data. Each type of data has its own method and frequency of collection. For further details on the methods used to collect each type of data Contact MnROAD.
The reports below document methods of current data collection:
Data Quality
Each set of data is collected, reviewed and entered into the MnROAD database system by designated research experts. Some data has automatic quality control checks before it is placed into the MnROAD database. The sensor tables are examples of the quality control range checks that separate data into either the (sensors type)_VALUES or the (sensor type)_ERRORS tables.

Offline MnROAD Data
Due to its file size or complexity, some MnROAD data is stored offline:
Field Monitoring
- Pathways and PaveTech (ERD) longitudinal elevations data is stored offline due to its large file size. These files/data are used to produce the summary information entered into the database (International Roughness Index, IRI).
- FWD History Files – Falling Weight Deflectometer produce a peak and history file for its load and deflection. The peak file is entered into the database while the individual history file time trace is stored offline due its file size.
- Dynamic Offline Strain Data – Individual traces of the dynamic strain data is stored offline due to its file size. Peak strains are picked from these files and stored in the MnROAD database.
- Mainline Traffic Raw Data – Single Hydraulic Load Cell (1990-2000) and Kistler Weigh in Motion 2000-on) collects raw data that is reviewed by Traffic Management who gives recommendations for edits in the database. The traffic data is then used to create #ESALS.
- Low Volume Road Traffic Raw Data – KWIM sensors in asphalt and concrete cells are collected and stored offline. Researchers filter the data manually and input a summary file into the database. Ground Penetrating Radar – Raw data files are stored offline. Researchers filter the data manually and input a summary file into the database.
