Information about upcoming traffic impacts will be provided as details become available.
Sat, July 11 through mid-August
The Robert St. Bridge crossing the Mississippi River in downtown St. Paul will close for approximately six weeks for repairs. Additional details regarding detour routes will be available soon.
About this project
MnDOT is planning a significant amount of work on Robert St., starting in 2020 and occurring through 2026, including pedestrian improvements, minor repairs of the bridges over the Mississippi River and the Union Pacific railroad and repairs to the Robert St./George St. viaduct. More significant construction improvements are planned for 2025. MnDOT will be engaging the community this summer to gather feedback to inform that work. More details about this community engagement opportunity will be available soon.
Robert St. lane changes
Beginning May 29, Robert St. will be micro-surfaced and restriped between Plato Blvd. to the intersection at Cesar Chavez St., reducing the number of lanes from five and four lanes to three lanes, to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety. This stretch of Robert St. has a history of pedestrian crashes. This configuration will improve safety and reduce the number of crashes by reducing the number of lanes a pedestrian must cross and the amount of time they are exposed to traffic. When complete, this project will not change or eliminate any parking or existing crosswalks in this area.
Lane changes between Plato Blvd. and Cesar Chavez St.:
SB Robert St. will be restriped to a single lane between Wood St. (south of Plato Blvd.) and Congress St. (north of Cesar Chavez St.). NB Robert St. will remain two lanes from WoodSt. to Plato Blvd.
Wood St. to Congress St. will be one lane in each direction with a two-way left turn lane down the middle.
Congress St. south to Annapolis St. will remain as it is currently: one lane in each direction with turn lanes and on-street parking.
