About this project

MnDOT is planning a significant amount of work on Robert St., starting in 2020 and occurring through 2026, including pedestrian improvements, minor repairs of the bridges over the Mississippi River and the Union Pacific railroad and repairs to the Robert St./George St. viaduct.

The future of Robert St.

MnDOT is planning significant improvements to Robert St. between Annapolis St. and Fillmore Ave. in 2025 or 2026. As a part of this planning process, MnDOT is now seeking community feedback to gather input on various topics, including safety improvements, accessibility and street design features.

You can provide your feedback by completing this online survey now through Sept. 30. You can also provide comments on specific spots along Robert St. using this interactive comment map.

MnDOT is also hosting a series of virtual public meetings, which will include a brief presentation, time to ask questions and provide feedback. Attendees will also have the option to join smaller group discussions to explore specific topics, such as street design improvements, landscaping, street lighting, and public art. Learn more and register for an upcoming meeting by visiting the meetings page.

Community input will influence MnDOT’s designs for future improvements on Robert St. Individual feedback will be kept private, but major themes and recurring comments will be summarized in a public report that is tentatively scheduled to be released in December 2020.

Any future work along Robert St. will be completed in coordination with other public entities, including the City of St. Paul and the Metropolitan Council, to limit construction disruptions for residents, businesses and property owners.

2020 bridge repairs

Starting July 11, the Robert St. Bridge over the Mississippi River will be closed for six weeks to undergo road surface and drainage repairs. Please plan for possible delays through August, watch for detour signs and view the alternative routes below.

  • Southbound traffic detour: Kellogg Blvd. to Wabasha St. Bridge to Plato Blvd.
  • Northbound traffic detour: Plato Blvd. to Wabasha St. Bridge to 5th St. E.
  • Pedestrians/bicyclist detour: Wabasha St. Bridge via Kellogg Blvd. or E Fillmore Ave.

The City of St. Paul permits 12-ton axle loads on the detour route.
