Project complete
Summary of work
During this project we resurfaced the roadway with concrete on about six miles of I-694 to provide a smoother and safer ride. The new surface should last about 25 to 30 years as the pavement in the project area had reached the end of its life cycle. The pavement was rehabilitated with concrete and asphalt. A layer of asphalt was placed atop the original concrete, acting as a flexible separator, and new concrete was placed atop the asphalt. This asphalt layer allows the concrete layers to flex independently of one another, reducing the chance of cracking. The process was lower in cost than removing and replacing existing pavement.
Other features included:
- Ramp reconstruction at Hwy 61, White Bear Avenue, Century Avenue and Hwy 36
- Minor bridge deck repairs and improvements
- Guardrail replacement
- Culvert replacement
- Slope and grade work
- Construction of four emergency pull off lanes at I-694 and Hwy 36 as a safety improvement
Cost
- $20 million
