I-494 Rehabilitation

Plymouth

Orange barrels on a highway

Noise walls

The proposed project is to repair the pavement, rehabilitate 17 bridges, and construct a  right side shoulder lane on
I-494 from I-394, in Minnetonka to I-694, in Maple Grove.

As part of the project development process, the impact of noise needs to be evaluated and mitigation offered, when it is reasonable and feasible. The project team conducted a noise study and concluded that the addition of noise barriers along the corridor would reduce noise for adjacent properties. MnDOT is required to offer noise abatement (noise walls) if the noise level exceeds 65 decibels (state standard) or 70 decibels (federal standard).

Noise levels

Existing I-494 noise levels: 65 to 75 Decibels
Modeled noise levels with the I-494 project and no walls: 66 to 76 decibels (average increase of <2.0 decibels)
Reductions from the proposed I-494 noise walls range from: 5 to 13.1 decibels
Decibel change detectable to people at: 5 decibels
