Projects at a glance
There are five major construction projects happening along I-35 and I-35W between Burnsville and Rush City as various projects continue or begin in the greater Twin Cities Metro area.
These projects represent a significant undertaking in building better roads and a multimodal transportation system that supports a growing economy and a stronger community.
Motorists are advised to:
- Allow extra time for travel delays, especially during peak travel times
- Minimize distractions (e.g., don’t use cell phones or eat or drink while driving)
- Follow posted speed limits; fines are up to $300 in work zones
- Avoid making lane changes within work zones
I-35W Minnesota River Bridge
August 2018 through November 2021
A multi-year construction project that will improve pedestrian and motorist access by reconstructing the I-35W Minnesota River Bridge spanning the River and the bridge over 106th St., replacing pavement from Cliff Rd. to 106th St. and constructing a trail between Black Dog Rd. and Lyndale Ave.

35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project in Minneapolis
August 2017 through fall 2021
The project begins its third year of construction spring 2019. The work includes upgrading pavement and bridges, improving transit service on I-35W and Lake St., and providing better access into the Lake St. Business District.

I-35W North MnPASS
Mid-March 2019 through fall 2021
Construction will improve traffic flow and travel times by resurfacing existing concrete pavement and ramps, replacing bridges and adding capacity with new MnPASS lanes and noise walls in specific areas.

I-35 North Metro Split
October 2017 through fall 2020
Construction includes resurfacing the existing pavement from the I-35W/35E split to Hwy 8; replacing the Hwy 97 Bridge with a diverging diamond type interchange and replacing two other bridges. Benefits of the two-year work include a smoother pavement, improved safety and better traffic flow.

I-35 Road Resurfacing
Fall 2018 through June 2020
The project includes concrete pavement and ramp resurfacing designed to improve ride quality and pavement condition and enhances roadside safety.
