Crews are making significant progress reconstructing the High Bridge deck. While you might start seeing construction vehicles driving across the bridge, please be aware that construction is ongoing and there still are many activities left to complete before the bridge can be reopened to traffic.
For your own safety, please stay off the bridge until it has been reopened to the public. The High Bridge is still on track for a December 2018 reopening.
Temporary sidewalk closures on Smith Ave. and Dodd Rd/Hwy 149
Aug. 22, 2017 through Spring 2019
The footprint of the High Bridge Dog Park has been reduced so it can remain open during construction
Vehicle access to the dog park via Randolph Ave. is closed for the duration of the bridge deck reconstruction and construction site cleanup. Users should access the dog park via Washington St. and may park on Spring St.
Pedestrian and bicycle access to the park will be available via the Randolph Ave. bike trail starting in December 2018.
There will be periodic trail closures through Spring 2019 during the construction site cleanup process.
Construction noise (Smith Ave. High Bridge)
Wed, Oct. 10 through Sat, Oct. 20
There will be intermittent jackhammering noise during the removal of temporary High Bridge footings
Fall 2018 (weather permitting)
Dodd Rd./Hwy 149 will be closed from Delaware Ave. to Wentworth Ave. for 7 days
Stage 4 of the Hwy 149 resurfacing project, which includes Dodd Rd, between Wentworth Ave. and Smith Ave, is currently scheduled for October and November. This work may extend into 2019 depending on weather. The delay of this stage is due to project-wide delays associated with utilities and other previously unknown underground issues inherent to reconstruction projects.
Project work items
There will be no construction activity the week of Dec. 25.
If you are interested in watching construction activities take place near the site, please use the scenic overlook on the south side of the bridge. The view from this location is outstanding. It also is safer than using Randolph or St. Clair avenues. Those areas have been cordoned off for safety reasons.
River traffic impacts
Safety measures have been taken to ensure safe passage underneath the bridge during construction. Please be aware that there will be a barge and likely a tugboat out on the river. This should not impede passage of river traffic. Please use caution when proceeding through the area.
If you live near the High Bridge you may hear noise from jackhammering as crews work to remove the concrete bridge decking. The deck removal is scheduled to occur through mid-January 2018 as well as a brief three- to four-week period in June 2018, weather permitting.
