Ramsey County Road 96 and ramps at I-35W are open
Diverging diamond interchange is first in Northern Twin Cities Metro area
The Ramsey County Road 96 bridge crossing Interstate 35W on the border of Arden Hills and New Brighton opened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12. All ramps between the interstate and County Road 96 also reopened.
The new diverging diamond interchange uses lanes that cross over at each end of the bridge to eliminate left-hand turns across opposing traffic. Instead of making hard left turns, drivers veer to the left for access. Pedestrians cross to the middle of the bridge and walk in the middle between the eastbound and westbound lanes with protective barriers on either side.
The interchange also features an integrated programmable signal system. Traffic signals are located at the crossovers at each end of the bridge where the ramps from I-35W intersect with County Road 96. The new system will allow vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists to safely cross the new County Road 96 bridge crossing I-35W, and will improve traffic movement between the two roadways.
