I-35W weekend closure in Minneapolis scheduled June 28-July 1

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Interstate 35W will close in both directions between Interstate 94 and Highway 62 in Minneapolis beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, June 28 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 1.

Lake Street will also be closed between First Avenue South and Third Avenue South during the closure so crews can demolish the I-35W bridge over Lake Street. Motorists should follow the posted detour.

Crews will begin closing the ramps for I-35W about one hour before closing the interstate. Motorists will be detoured using Interstate 394, Highway 100 and Highway 62.

Crews will work 24-hours-a-day during the closure getting the freeway ready for the next stage of work.

When I-35W opens Monday, southbound traffic will use newly reconstructed lanes in the median of I-35W to allow crews to reconstruct the southbound and part of the northbound lanes. Work will begin on the new transit station at Lake Street during this phase of construction.  The ramp from I-35W south to 46th Street reopens Monday, July 1. Motorists need to be in the far right lane to access the 46th Street ramp.

Since the I-35W@94 project started in August 2017, crews have rebuilt the 28th Street, 38th Street and Franklin Avenue bridges, reconstructed lanes on I-35W and Interstate 94 near downtown Minneapolis, built retaining walls, noise walls and replaced utility pipes and made progress on the ramp from I-35W north to I-94 west and the 24th and 40th Street pedestrian bridges.

This closure is part of the larger four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The work includes reconstructing pavement, bridges and ramps on I-35W, adding new access ramps to the Lake Street Business District, building a new transit station on the interstate and constructing new MnPASS lanes. Once complete, motorists and residents will have better accessibility, safety and mobility in the area.  Work is expected to be completed in fall 2021.
