Interstate 35 Forest Lake rest area reopens Jan. 7

Periodic I-35 lane closures in Forest Lake and Columbus continue through winter

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Forest Lake rest area on southbound Interstate 35 in Forest Lake will reopen to the public at 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7.

Southbound I-35 access to the rest area has been closed since August for roof construction and southbound I-35 paving, as part of the I-35 North Metro Split project.

All ramps in the I-35 North Metro Split project area are now open for the season. Periodic off-peak lane closures on both directions of I-35 near Highway 97 will continue through the winter, for Highway 97 bridge construction. Northbound I-35 may be reduced to two lanes between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. Southbound I-35 may be reduced to two lanes between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

During the second year of this project beginning this spring, I-35 between the I-35W/I-35E split and Highway 97 will have long-term lane and ramp closures. Motorists should expect traffic delays and backups and are advised to plan ahead.

The I-35 North Metro Split project includes resurfacing the existing pavement from the I-35W/I-35E split to Highway 8; replacing the Highway 97 bridge with a diverging diamond interchange; replacing the northbound I-35W bridge over I-35E and the westbound Highway 8 bridge over I-35. The project will provide a better ride quality, as well as improve safety and traffic flow at the Highway 97 interchange.
