I-35W weekend closure in Minneapolis and Roseville scheduled Aug. 3-6

38th Street bridge over I-35W to open Aug. 3; 40th Street bridge over I-35W to close Aug. 3

ROSEVILLE, Minn. —Interstate 35W will again close in both directions between Hwy 62 and I-694 in Minneapolis and Roseville, beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, Aug. 3 through 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6.

Crews will begin closing the on and off ramps for I-35W one hour before closing the interstate.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Hwy 62, Hwy 100 and I-694. Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street. Access to and from I-35W between County Road C and I-694 will remain open to local roads. In addition to the I-35W closure, Hwy 280 will also be closed this weekend except for between University Avenue and Larpenteur Avenue, which will remain open for local traffic.

The closures are needed for two Hwy projects. The 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown project will be demolishing the 40th Street pedestrian and bicycle bridge above I-35W in south Minneapolis, which requires the closure of I-35W between I-94 and Hwy 62. The I-35W Resurfacing Minneapolis to Roseville project will be repaving I-35W between Fourth Street in Minneapolis and Ramsey County Road C in Roseville

The 40th Street bridge will close at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3. The bridge will remain closed through fall 2020. Bicyclists and pedestrians should follow the posted detour and use the paved trail on the east side of Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 42nd Street E and Second Avenue S. In addition to completely reconstructing the bridge, the long-term closure is needed because construction of the new bridge piers cannot begin until several stages of temporary traffic lanes on I-35W are completed below the bridge.

Before closing the 40th Street bridge, the newly reconstructed 38th Street bridge is scheduled to reopen Friday, Aug. 3. The bridge has been closed since early March this year.

This weekend closure of I-35W is similar to the closure that occurred last weekend, July 27-30. The full closure of I-35W last weekend allowed many construction activities to be safely and efficiently completed to help the progress of both projects including:

  • Resurfacing of northbound I-35W lanes between 4th Street and County Road C
  • Finishing work to reopen the ramp from westbound I-94 to 11th Street in downtown Minneapolis
  • Placing traffic on newly paved westbound I-94 lanes between Chicago Avenue and Nicollet Avenue
  • Asphalt patching on I-35W between downtown and 43rd Street to provide a smoother road
  • Installation of a utility line across I-35W at 39th Street
  • Conducting soil borings on I-35W as part of the storm water tank storage project

The 35W@94 reconstruction project and I-35W Minneapolis to Roseville project are two of many critical road and bridge improvement projects underway across the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area this summer. These projects represent a significant undertaking to build better roads and a multimodal transportation system that supports a growing economy and a stronger community.
