Portland Ave. bridge over I-94 reopens
31st Street ramp to southbound I-35W expected to open Friday
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The Portland Avenue bridge in Minneapolis spanning Interstate 94 and Interstate 35W will reopen by the end of the day, ahead of schedule.
The Portland Avenue bridge closed in early October to allow crews to work on the piers and the drainage on the bridge deck. The pier work was needed in advance of the upcoming work to reconstruct the I-35W and I-94 interchange.
Additionally, the 31st Street ramp to southbound I-35W that has been closed since mid-September is anticipated to open to traffic by 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17. The short-term ramp closure was necessary for utility work. A longer-term closure for the 31st Street ramp is planned to take place later on in the project to accommodate other construction activities near the ramp.
The closures are part of the larger, four-year 35W@94: Downtown to Crosstown reconstruction project on I-35W between 43rd Street and downtown Minneapolis. The work includes reconstructing pavement, bridges and ramps on I-35W, adding new access ramps to the Lake Street Business District and building a transit station on the interstate. Once complete, motorists and residents will have better accessibility, safety and mobility in the area.
Work is expected to be completed in fall 2021. To learn more about the project, visit: www.mndot.gov/35w94
