Orange barrels on a highway

Interstate 35E/University Avenue ramp closures begin May 11

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will encounter delays and detours on southbound Interstate 35E and University Avenue in St. Paul as two area ramps close before morning rush hours on Wednesday, May 11.

The following ramps will be closed and detoured:

  • Southbound I-35E to University Avenue
    • Detour: Continue on southbound I-35E and exit on the temporary ramp to 12th Street. Take westbound 12th Street to northbound Jackson Street to University Avenue.
  • University Avenue to southbound I-35E/westbound I-94
    • Detour: Westbound 12th Street to the southbound I-35E/westbound I-94 entrance ramps just west of Wabasha Street

The ramps are expected to remain closed for several weeks as crews work on sidewalks, a traffic signal system, grading, noise wall painting and other area activities. Additionally, periodic lane closures/lane shifts on University Avenue will take place as needed near I-35E during the work, though the road is not expected to completely close.

The work is part of the I-35E Cayuga project, which aims to reconstruct I-35E between University Avenue and Maryland Avenue, including replacement of the Cayuga Bridge, the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge and the railroad bridges along I-35E.
