Orange barrels on a highway

Xerxes Avenue Bridge in Bloomington is open

Rebuilding the bridge is part of the Interstate 494 improvement project

Roseville, Minn. - After being closed for over 11 months, the Xerxes Avenue Bridge spanning I-494 in Bloomington re-opened today at 12:54 p.m.

Originally built in 1960, the bridge did not meet the vertical clearance requirements over the freeway and it needed improvements. Crews began removing the bridge in August 2012.

Motorists will notice wider sidewalks on each side of the bridge, new ornamental railings, and an additional turn lane in each direction to assist in the flow of traffic and improve safety.

Crews will continue working on the other segments of the freeway improvement project that will improve the flow of traffic, ride quality for motorists, and reduce roadway maintenance needs by replacing guard rails with concrete median barriers and improve future opportunities that match local development goals for the area due to replacement of the Xerxes Avenue Bridge.
