Xerxes Avenue Bridge in Bloomington re-opens June 14

Roseville, Minn. – After being closed for 11 months, the Xerxes Avenue Bridge spanning I-494 in Bloomington will re-open at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 14.

Originally built in 1960, the bridge did not meet the vertical clearance requirements over the freeway and it needed improvements. Crews began removing the bridge in August 2012.

Motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists will notice wider sidewalks on each side of the bridge, new ornamental railings, and an additional turn lane in each direction to assist in the flow of traffic and improve safety.

Crews will continue working on the other segments of the freeway improvement project that will improve the flow of traffic, improve the ride quality for motorists, reduce roadway maintenance needs by replacing guard rails with concrete median barriers and improve future opportunities that match local development goals due to replacement of the Xerxes Avenue Bridge.
