MnDOT part of team to win 2013 Engineering Excellence Award
Hwy 610 extension project takes honors

(Roseville, Minn.) – Roseville, Minn. — The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) has awarded the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Metro District, in partnership with Braun Intertec, C.S. McCrossan and SRF Consulting Group, an Engineering Excellence Award for the 2011 Hwy 610 extension between 169 and County Road 81 in Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove.

The award, in the “Intelligent Compaction” category, was awarded to MnDOT and partners for innovative application and analysis methods related to monitoring and documenting the stiffness of in-place soils for pavement support.

According to the judges, “These are the kinds of things that will really impact the engineering side for many years to come.”

MnDOT’s method detected non-uniform soil conditions and determined compliance with the project, allowing for the construction on in-place soils.

The project included the extension of Hwy 610 three miles west of 169 to County Road 81through the northwestern suburbs and improved local traffic by diverting vehicles from heavily traveled local roads to the new segment of freeway. The project also included the construction of two interchanges, three highway bridges, and noise walls, a pedestrian bridge, roundabouts and bus only shoulders.
