Southbound I- 35 in Rice County has single-lane traffic
Expect major delays on weekends and heavy travel times

ROCHESTER, Minn. – Motorists will encounter major delays on southbound I- 35 between Rice County Road 9 and the Heath Creek Rest Area on weekends and peak travel times now through late September.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation anticipates stop-and-go traffic for several miles before the construction work zone begins due to heavy traffic volumes, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes and avoid the area during peak travel times, if possible.

During backups, motorists should use both lanes and take turns merging into the construction zone, where single-lane traffic begins. This method reduces rear-end crashes and helps keep traffic flowing as best as possible.

Single-lane traffic on I-35 is necessary as work continues on the concrete repair project.

Interstate Improvement Inc. is the prime contractor for the $2.5 million project.

MnDOT urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
