Left lanes of I-94 between Lexington Avenue and Dale Street reopening late on Aug. 21; Smart Lanes to be activated between downtowns

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – The left lane of both directions of I-94, closed since July 23 for the reconstruction of the center pier of the Chatsworth Pedestrian Bridge, will reopen by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21.

The left and center lanes of both directions of I-94 will close at 8 p.m. Aug. 21 in order for crews to remove equipment and traffic control.

Certain stages of pier construction were expedited in order to re-open the lanes. Several short-term non-rush hour lane closures will be scheduled between Aug. 30 and Nov. 15.

Motorists traveling both directions of I-94 between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul will begin to benefit from enhanced, real-time travel information on Aug. 19 when Smart Lane technology is implemented.

This innovative Smart Lane technology is identical to that installed on I-35W between Burnsville and downtown Minneapolis and displays lane-specific overhead information about road conditions ahead. The goal of Smart Lanes is to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and improve safety.

Innovative Smart Lane signage includes information such as advisory speeds to warn motorists of slow traffic ahead and alert them of crashes and closed lanes. Symbols such as a red ‘X’ to indicate a closed lane or merge arrows are used to give advance warning of situations and help reduce congestion and collisions.

This I-94 traffic management system technology exists between the Lowry Avenue Tunnel and John Ireland Boulevard and is part of the overall I-94 improvement project completed earlier this summer:

No MnPASS Express Lanes are planned as part of this project.
