I-494 improvement project begins July 23

I-494 scheduled to close July 27-30 for Xerxes Avenue Bridge removal

ROSEVILLE, Minn. — Motorists will experience delays and closures on both directions of Interstate 494 between Highway 100 and 34th Avenue in Edina, Bloomington and Richfield as a project to improve the corridor begins Monday, July 23.

The overall project will reconstruct the Xerxes Avenue Bridge spanning I-494, add a westbound auxiliary lane between Nicollet Avenue and Portland Avenue and between I-35W and Highway 100, resurface I-494 mainline and ramps, reconstruct the median and resurface various frontage roads.

During the week of July 23, crews will work overnight to shift traffic to the inside of the roadway to prepare for shoulder reconstruction and westbound auxiliary lane addition. Overnight lane closures between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. will occur for the traffic shifts, and will continue to occur as needed throughout the project.

The Xerxes Avenue Bridge will close to traffic on July 26 to prepare for bridge removal. During the weekend of July 27-30, both directions of I-494 between Highway 100 and I-35W will be closed for removal of the Xerxes Avenue Bridge spanning the roadway. Ramp closures will begin at 9 p.m. Friday, and the full closure will begin at 10 p.m. During the closure, posted detours will direct motorists to use Highway 100, Highway 62 and I-35W. The roadway will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 30.

In addition to Xerxes Avenue Bridge removal, crews will be installing moveable barrier (barrier that is moved out from the shoulders via a machine to efficiently set up and remove lane closures) during the weekend closure. The moveable barriers will be used throughout the duration of the project.

Construction of the news Xerxes Avenue Bridge will continue through November 2012 and resume in April 2013, weather permitting. The new bridge is expected to open in late May 2013.

Crews will also be resurfacing various ramps throughout the corridor during the 2012 construction season. Ramp closures are expected to occur in August and September, and updates will be made in advance of the closures.

Ramp work, westbound auxiliary lane additon and shoulder reconstruction is expected to be completed by November 2012.

After winter, construction will resume in April 2013. Work during the 2013 season will include median recionstruction and drainage work, and resurfacing of mainline I-494. Full closures of I-494 will occur for resurfacing, and updates will be made in advance of the closures.

The project will raise the vertical clearance and update pedestrian accessibilities on the Xerxes Avenue Bridge, provide a smoother driving service and extend the lifespan of I-494, improve traffic flow due to added auxiliary lanes, and reduce maintenance needs by replacing guardrail with concrete barrier in the median. The entire project is expected to be completed by September 2013.
