First westbound I-94 closure in Minneapolis scheduled for May 18-21
Resurfacing continues

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will experience delays and a detour on westbound I-94 in Minneapolis between Hwy 280 and I-394 as the roadway closes at 8 p.m. Friday, May 18.

Ramp closures to and from westbound I-94 throughout the closure limits will begin at 7 p.m. May 18, including the ramps from northbound and southbound I-35W to westbound I-94.

During the full closure of the roadway, a posted detour will direct motorists west of downtown St. Paul to use northbound Hwy 280, northbound I-35W and westbound I-694 to access westbound I-94. Motorists east of St. Paul will be directed to use northbound I-35E to access westbound I-694 due to the I-94 closure for Central Corridor Light Rail Transit construction.

Motorists on I-35W will be directed to use westbound Hwy 62, northbound Hwy 100 and eastbound I-394 to access westbound I-94.

The roadway and all ramps will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, May 21.

The closure is needed as crews resurface the roadway as part of the I-94 improvement project. This closure of westbound I-94 is being coordinated to occur during a weekend that the Minnesota Twins are away. One more closure of each direction of I-94 will still occur in the coming weeks. The work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather.

The I-94 improvement project between downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul features Smart Lane technology to improve safety and congestion. The project also includes resurfacing, which will create a smoother ride for motorists and extend the lifespan of the roadway, drainage improvements, bridge maintenance work, reconstruction of the shoulders, and realignment of the lanes.
