Hiawatha Avenue (Hwy 55) closed in Minneapolis

Update Feb. 23: As of 2:00 pm Thursday, Hiawatha Avenue (Hwy 55) remains closed between East 26th Street and Lake Street. Check for updates. The Martin Olav Sabo bicycle and pedestrian bridge is also closed.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Hiawatha Avenue (Highway 55) in Minneapolis is closed today between East 26th Street and Lake Street in Minneapolis during repairs to the Martin Olav Sabo bridge which spans the highway. The bicycle/pedestrian bridge was closed late last night after a cable support broke and cause a pair of cables anchored farthest east on the bridge to fail.

Hiawatha Avenue will remain closed through morning rush hour during work to build supports beneath the damaged section.  Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid congestion. Hiawatha Light Rail line will continue to operate this morning but buses will be used to route passengers through the area to make connections on either side.

The Sabo Bridge is a 2,200 foot-long cable-stayed suspension bridge that opened in November of 2007 to carry bicycles and pedestrians over Hiawatha Avenue.
