Annual inspection, bridge deck repair set for Hwy 52 Lafayette bridge east of downtown St. Paul

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists should expect delays the next two weekends while the Minnesota Department of Transportation performs the annual in-depth inspection of the Hwy 52 Lafayette bridge spanning the Mississippi River east of downtown St. Paul. The inspection is scheduled the weekends of Sept. 17-18 and Sept. 24-25.

Inspection activities will begin on the southbound bridge at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept.17 and continue until completed. During the inspection, the southbound bridge will be closed and traffic will follow a signed detour.

The following weekend, inspectors will take an in-depth look at the northbound bridge starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. The northbound bridge also will be closed to traffic and detoured. Although several underbridge inspection units will be in use, the inspections could continue to the following day each weekend if needed.

Electronic message signs will alert drivers to which side of the bridge is being examined.

Motorists are advised use alternate routes to avoid congestion. Inspection activities will be cancelled in case of high winds or other inclement weather.

The bridge was last inspected in mid-September 2010.
