I-35E resurfacing project kicks off after Memorial Day Weekend

(Roseville, Minn.) –Motorists will encounter temporary lane restrictions and possible congestion during non rush hours as work begins Tuesday, May 31 on I-35E between White Bear Lake and the I-35E/I-35W split in Columbus (south of Forest Lake).

Initial work will include bypass construction and ramp meter installation at the I-35E-Ramsey County Road 96, County Road J and County Road 14 interchanges along with additional preparation work. This initial work will take approximately three weeks once the project begins.

Once the bypasses and other prep work are completed, traffic will be shifted to a single lane in each direction in late June, weather permitting.

During the project, the existing blacktop pavement will be removed from the concrete below and replaced with a 10-inch-thick unbonded concrete overlay, which is a long-term pavement fix. The project also includes replacement of the box culvert that carries Clearwater Creek beneath

I-35E, located just south of the I-35E/Anoka County Road 14 interchange in Lino Lakes.

During the concrete paving, there will be temporary ramp closures at the County Road 96, County Road J and County Road 14 interchanges. Mn/DOT will stagger closures so that ramp closures will not happen at all of the interchanges simultaneously.

Once concrete paving is complete in late September, traffic will be returned to its four-lane configuration to finish the shoulder paving, paving tie-ins at each end of the project and removal of all temporary bypasses. Motorists will encounter some off-peak lane closures to finish this work. Work should be completed by November 2011.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid congestion and possible delays.
