I-94 bridge painting project begins May 16

First of four weekend closures is scheduled for May 20-23

ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Motorists will experience delays and detours as the I- 94 bridge painting project between 49th Avenue and Shingle Creek Parkway in Minneapolis and Brooklyn Center begins Monday, May 16.

Four weekend closures will be required as crews paint 10 bridges spanning I-94 and I-694 during the project. The first closure will occur May 20-23. I-94 will be closed in both directions between I-394 and I-694 at 10 p.m. Friday, May 20. Ramps leading to the closed freeway may begin closing at approximately 9 p.m. Posted detours will direct motorists to use I-394, Hwy 169 and I-694. The roadway will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, May 23.

The ramp from Shingle Creek Parkway to eastbound I-94 will close on May 16 for the duration of the project. Posted detours will direct motorists to eastbound I-694 and to use the loops at East River Road in order to access westbound I-694 and then eastbound I-94. Overnight lane closures may be required as needed throughout the project as well.

When approaching lane closures during heavy traffic or when there are backups, motorists are advised to use both lanes up to the point where the lanes actually close in order to minimize backups and increase safety. When approaching lane closures during light traffic conditions if there are no backups, motorists are advised to merge well in advance of the lane closure in order to eliminate late merges at high speeds and avoid subsequent safety concerns.

Further updates regarding the three additional weekend closures will be made in the coming weeks. The project will enhance the appearance, protect the steel and extend the lifespan of the bridges. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of June.
