Alternate route suggested for bicycle/pedestrian traffic during Lafayette Bridge construction
Route avoids travel beneath bridge during construction
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – During construction of the new Lafayette bridges in St. Paul, bicyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to use an alternate route to reach the Bruce Vento Trail and avoid overhead construction activity. From downtown St. Paul, trail users can go east on Fifth Street East, north on Broadway Street and then east on Seventh Street East to Payne Avenue where they can reach the trail. This route is an alternate for the Fourth Street connection to the trail.
The alternate route allows users to avoid any potential construction activity beneath the bridges or unsafe conditions.
The Sam Morgan trail that runs along the Mississippi River, and does not connect with the Vento trail system, will remain open during construction. It will be realigned slightly during the project to keep people away from the construction activity.
Construction of the new Lafayette bridges crossing the Mississippi River on the east end of downtown St. Paul began in early January. The project will build two new bridges to replace the existing Lafayette Bridges, that opened to traffic in 1968. The new structures will feature two through lanes and an auxiliary lane in each direction for entering and exiting traffic.
Additional work includes replacing the Hwy 52 bridges spanning I-94, reconstruction of the interchange north of the bridge, realignment of adjoining roadways and the redecking of the Hwy 52 bridge spanning Plato Avenue. Completion is slated for fall 2014.
