Hastings Bridge reduced to single lane beginning April 25

Crews to perform annual safety inspection

(Roseville, Minn.) – Motorists will encounter delays on Hwy 61 next week when the Hastings Bridge spanning the Mississippi River is reduced to a single lane daily between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Flaggers will direct traffic on the two-lane bridge. Work will begin Monday, April 25 and be completed by Friday, April 29.

The lane closures are necessary as bridge inspectors perform the annual safety inspection of all critical bridge components on the existing Hastings Bridge. The federally mandated inspection is not part of the new Hwy 61 Hastings Bridge Project.

Motorists are reminded to use the “Zipper Merge Technique” when approaching the bridge during times of heavy congestion. When traffic slows, drivers should fill all available lanes safely up to the designated merge point, then take turns at the merge point, then safely accelerate back to the posted work zone speed limit.

Drivers also are reminded that straddling lanes, creating “rolling road blocks” or otherwise impeding traffic is illegal.
