Parking lot, road closures ahead as work continues on Hwy 52/Lafayette bridge
replacement project
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Although preliminary work has been underway since early January, motorists have encountered few closures or delays as part of the Hwy 52 Lafayette bridge replacement project. However that will change as several closures are planned beginning early next week.
Beginning Monday, March 7, 5th Street between John Street and Kittson Street beneath the north end of the Lafayette bridge will be closed permanently to build the loop between northbound Hwy 52 and East 7th Street and the loop from Hwy 52 to westbound Interstate 94.
At the same time, the parking lot between 4th Street and 5th Street beneath the north end of the bridge will be closed permanently. The new abutments for the north end of the new bridges will be built where the parking lot is located.
Motorists also will encounter temporary lane closures on 4th Street between John Street and the railroad overpass for demolition of buildings and construction of retaining walls, the storm sewer system and water and sewer relocation.
Additional work has begun on Pier 1 located on land on the south side of the Mississippi River and will soon begin on Pier 2, also on land on the south side of the river. Cofferdam construction is planned to start sometime next week in the river.
Temporary pier work also is underway on the Eaton Street bridge to allow northbound traffic to be switched to a single lane on the southbound lanes of Hwy 52 in May for redecking of the Eaton Street and Plato Boulevard bridges along with repairs and resurfacing of the Concord Street bridge. Detour routes will be posted for future closures of Eaton Street.
The Hwy 52 Lafayette bridge project will build two new river bridges to replace the existing Lafayette Bridges that opened to traffic in 1968. The new structure will feature two through lanes and an auxiliary lane in each direction for entering and exiting traffic.
Additional work includes replacing the Hwy 52 bridge over I-94, reconstruction of the interchange north of the bridge, realignment of adjoining roadways and the redecking of the Hwy 52 bridge spanning Plato Avenue. Completion is slated for fall 2014.
