Metro area cleanup gets underway after another major snowfall
Use caution and give crews room to work; rush hour may be affected
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Cleanup activities from Sunday and Monday’s major snowfall will continue on state roadways throughout the entire Twin Cities Metro area this week.
Mn/DOT’s Metro District Maintenance crews are working to remove the nearly one foot of new snow where accumulation can make surfaces and sight lines hazardous.
Crews first will concentrate on roadways’ bridge rails, guardrails and shoulders throughout the week. Motorists are encouraged to drive for conditions and use caution.
Although the goal is to affect rush-hour commuters as little as possible, crews will focus on certain priorities which may affect rush hour traffic. Work will include clearing intersections to improve sight distance, clearing snow from turn lanes, exit and entrance ramps and loops. The activity will involve various types of heavy equipment.
“We understand the needs of the motoring public, and our job is to make cleanup as simple and inconspicuous as possible while maintaining a safe environment for all of us,” said Mark Fischbach, Mn/DOT snow and ice superintendent.
Motorists are reminded that Minnesota’s “Move Over” law directs them to move over one lane on multilane highways for law enforcement, construction, emergency and maintenance crews. If moving over is not possible, motorists must slow down.
When traveling near snow removal equipment, Mn/DOT urges motorists to:
- Give crews room to work and pass equipment carefully
- Stay alert – Snow equipment moves in and out of work areas continuously
- Drive at speeds according to road conditions
