Twin Cities Metro area clean-up in full gear after major snowfall
Motorists should slow down, give crews room to work
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Cleanup activities from this past weekend’s major snowfall continues on state roadways throughout the entire Twin Cities Metro area this week.
Mn/DOT’s Metro District Maintenance crews are working to remove snow accumulations from shoulders, ramps and bridges where compacted snow can make surfaces hazardous. Chemicals for de-icing do not work well in the cold temperatures. During cleanup activities drivers are encouraged to drive for conditions and use caution.
Although the goal is to affect rush-hour commuters as little as possible, maintenance crews may be working on certain priority activities on area freeways during rush hour. Compacted snow remains along highways in certain areas, and the impending snowfall forecast for today and tomorrow will require continuous effort. Work includes clearing intersections and other areas to improve sight distance, clearing snow from turn lanes, exit and entrance ramps and loops, as well as bridges spanning other roadways.
When traveling near snow removal equipment, Mn/DOT urges motorists to:
- Give crews room to work and pass equipment carefully.
- Stay alert – Snow removal equipment including snowblowers, front end loaders graders and trucks, move in and out of the work area continuously.
- Slow down – Equipment often moves at a slower speed than existing traffic.
- Drive at safe speeds according to road conditions, and give yourself plenty of travel time.
