Crews to gather samples to study deicing chemicals’ effect on concrete

Roseville, Minn. — Motorists may experience possible delays on the I-35W Bridge spanning the Mississippi River on Thursday, Oct. 21.

The right shoulder of southbound I-35W will be closed at 10 a.m. between 4th St./University Ave. and Washington Ave. The shoulder will be reopened by1 p.m. the same day.

During the closure, crews, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), will remove concrete core samples the bridge in order to analyze concrete exposed to deicing chemicals.

The study will assess the concrete’s durability to deicing and analyze its affects on different concrete mix designs and under specific environmental conditions.

The study will help Mn/DOT identify optimal concrete mix designs and deicing chemical selections. The study also will aid bridge maintenance staff in detecting potential concrete degradation.
